learner driver advice - recommended materials
for the practical test and beyond

driving - the essential skills

My advice is to read 'Section Ten - Defensive Driving' at the beginning of each month (it's only 20 pages long) for your first two years of driving. If you're familiar with the ideas behind defensive driving techniques not only are you likely to become a safer driver and save money on your car insurance but you will also be closer to being able to sit and pass an Advanced Driving Test. If you want to be a good driver it is essential that you realise that passing your 'L' driving test is only the very beginning. This book is really indispensable! Vital throughout your training towards your Learner Test, 'Driving - The Essential Skills', contains
plenty of valuable information you may need in the future such as sections on motorway driving, towing a trailer and driving in adverse weather conditions. And if you would prefer not to need the section on what to do in the event of an accident, use this book and get the other books I recommend here and consider some further driver training and maybe sit an advanced driving test.

roadcraft - and - mind driving

I would strongly recommend that all drivers read these 2 books. Read about Roadcraft on the tso web site and about Mind Driving on the skilldriver web site. They are both also available on amazon. Driving is a skill for life so why not make it both more safe AND more enjoyable. Aim to become someone who, like me, would opt for a drive out in the countryside for relaxation when things get a little hectic, rather than someone for whom driving itself is one of lifes major stressors! I'm so glad I love driving and I want you to feel the same way.
