learner driver advice - ask the right questions

Which test centres do you usually use?

This question is to be asked together with the following question but can in itself sometimes be revealing. If the instructor uses only one or two test centres even though there are others in the area you could ask why. I usually stick with one test centre for the majority of my pupils tests because I like to find one with a nice bunch of examiners and stick with it unless some less friendly examiners appear there, in which case I try out the other local test centres. It is also easier for me to avoid the routes of just one local test centre (see question below).

Where will I be driving on my lessons?

Whilst you may think it sounds great to be practicing on the roads you will be taking your test on, you want an instructor who will be taking you on a wide variety of roads and regularly using new roads on your lessons so that you learn how to drive and not just how to pass the test!

I get so many clients who come to me with a full licence but have not used it for years and are very nervous about getting back on the road. This is usually because they just went round and round the test routes on their driving lessons and when they went out on their own on roads they didn't know they found it too much of a challenge and ended up not using their licence!

In fact, there are so many reasons that avoiding the test centre routes is such a good idea I have listed them on another page: reasons why not driving round the test routes is such a good idea
